Plans for a $500-million, master-planned community in Banning, to be known as Sun Lakes, have been announced by Presley of Southern California. The project is expected to have a major impact on that desert city between Riverside and Palm Springs.

To be built out in 12 to 15 years, the project will include 4,000 mixed-density dwelling units, an 18-hole golf course and 148 acres of commercial center and business park with Interstate 10 freeway frontage at the Highland Springs exit.

Banning’s mayor, Earle Crawford, expects his city will nearly double in population because of the Sun Lakes project. He added, “We’ve watched the development around Palm Springs and the eastward-moving growth from Los Angeles. Reasons for Banning to grow are approaching us from both directions.”

The project will be centered around the golf course, which will contain lakes. A clubhouse for seniors is planned, as well as separated retirement living, and there will be custom lot sales on the golf course. Homes will be detached in early phases and lot sales will vary from 4,000 to 10,000 square feet.
