Long Beach : Supervisors Urge City’s Selection as Missouri Port

Share

The county Board of Supervisors has voted to support the City of Long Beach in its effort to be named the home port for the battleship Missouri. The board voted Tuesday to send a resolution to the Department of the Navy urging that it select Long Beach as the site.

The Missouri, which is undergoing renovation at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard, is the second battleship to be reactivated by the military for extensive modernization. The first, the New Jersey, was renovated in Long Beach and assigned to home port there.

The city is competing with two others, Honolulu and San Francisco, to be home port of the 45,000-ton Missouri, its $25-million payroll and the attendant boost to the local economy. The U.S. Navy is expected to decide on the home port in March or April.
