Martinez to Head Jobs Panel

Rep. Matthew G. Martinez (D-Monterey Park) has been elected chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee’s subcommittee on employment opportunities. He succeeds Rep. Augustus F. Hawkins (D-Los Angeles), who was elected chairman of the full committee.

The subcommittee has jurisdiction over the Job Corps and other training programs.

Martinez said one of his first priorities will be to fight to save the Job Corps, which the Reagan Administration has proposed to eliminate in a general cutback on non-defense spending.
