Two armed men robbed a Lancaster jewelry store of more than 250 gold and diamond rings, then eluded sheriff’s deputies by fleeing on foot into the desert. The two entered Zale’s Jewelers and broke the display cases to take the rings, valued at an estimated $750,000. They then drove to Antelope Valley College, where they abandoned their car. Law officers, using helicopters and canine units, fruitlessly searched the desert area for four hours. The getaway car had been reported stolen from Inglewood.
