Brea : Shopping Center Planned for Site of School Stadium

Developers said Friday that they plan to build a retail center, similar to the Brea Plaza, where the Brea Olinda High School stadium now stands.

Preliminary plans call for the new Brea Marketplace to include a Ralphs grocery store, restaurants and smaller stores such as hardware and drug stores.

City and school officials are only in the talking stages with the developer and no date has been set for the start of construction, said Jim DeStefano, city planner.

Representatives from Lowe Development Co., the builders, and Coldwell Banker, which is marketing the center, met Friday with members of the Brea Redevelopment Agency and Brea-Olinda School District to discuss the plans.

The center will be the second of three developments on the 40-acre high school site.

An insurance company office building is under construction where the school’s cows once grazed, and housing is planned for where the high school stands.

The leases from the school property, which is in a redevelopment district, will be used to pay for a new high school.

District officials are negotiating the purchase price of vacant land north of Lambert Road. A decision on that site is not expected until June, said Leonard McKain, assistant superintendent.
