UCLA has installed a solar heating system to provide hot water in housing facilities on and off the campus.

The $1-million project is one of the largest residential solar heating installations in California, according to officials. UCLA’s five-year contract provides for the university to purchase solar-heated water for 15% less than it would pay for water heated by natural gas.

The program “presents an opportunity for significant financial savings to UCLA while supporting its interests in energy conservation,” said Michael Foraker, campus housing administrator.
