Summit Health Ltd., Studio City, said it formed a new subsidiary, Summit Pharmaceuticals, to market mail-order nutritional supplements under the name of Summit Nutrition.

Los Angeles-based Northrop Corp. said it has been awarded a $9-million design contract by Lockheed Missile & Space Co., Sunnyvale, involving development of blue laser technology for the Navy’s satellite/submarine laser communications program.

Whittaker Health Services Inc., Los Angeles, a subsidiary of Whittaker Corp., said it has acquired a controlling interest in Health Plan of Virginia Inc., a privately held corporation in Norfolk.

The Los Angeles-based accounting firm of Coopers & Lybrand said that, as part of its plan to expand into information technology, it has merged with Gottfried Consultants Inc., a Los Angeles management consulting firm that specializes in technology planning.

Ashton Tate, a Culver City-based software publisher, and Applied Computer Techniques, a British maker of microcomputers, announced a planned distribution agreement covering ACT versions of Ashton Tate business software in the United States and Europe. Details were not disclosed.

Separately, Ashton Tate said it signed a $2.7-million contract with Editrice Italiana Software S.p.A. to distribute Ashton Tate products in Italy.

Western Gear Corp., Lynwood, said it sold its Power Transmission division to Zimmerman Holdings Inc., San Marino. The unit has been renamed WesTech Gear Corp.
