PEKING —
More than 1,600 prison inmates in Shaanxi province in central China were paroled to join their families for Chinese New Year, the official Xinhua news agency reported Friday.
The inmates had committed crimes ranging from harboring criminals to murder, Xinhua said. It quoted a local judicial official as saying the amnesty was aimed at encouraging the prisoners to reform themselves.
The lunar new year, a time when families traditionally gather for holiday feasting, was celebrated nationwide on Wednesday.
