Vandalized School to Get Security System
Angered by vandals who have caused about $104,000 in damage in recent months to Calabasas High School, Las Virgenes Unified School District officials have decided to install a security system at the isolated campus.
Board of Education members voted to install sophisticated infared detectors and special door-tamper sensors at the school at 22855 Mulholland Highway.
Officials said the alarms will supplement a private security patrol hired after the most recent incident last fall. In that break-in, about $2,000 in damage was done to equipment and supplies in a debate classroom.
Other vandalism included the ramming of a pickup truck through the high school administration building in April, causing $65,000 in damage, and a break-in in August that caused $15,000 in damage to the same building.
Officials said the 24-acre, 10-year-old campus is “nestled away from the street and out of the view of nearby homes.”
“We just don’t want to take any more chances,” a district spokesman said.
