A federal jury in Wichita, Kan., awarded $11.5 million to the family of a Wichita woman who died of toxic shock syndrome. The jury found tampon manufacturers Playtex International 80% liable for the damages and Wichita Dr. Tom Hays 20% liable. Hays was not a defendant in the suit and cannot be required to pay the damages. Betty O’Gilvie, a 21-year-old mother of two, died in April, 1983.
