LAGOS, Nigeria — American businesswoman Marie Lee McBroom was acquitted today of six charges of illegally exporting oil from Nigeria--offenses that could have resulted in the death penalty.
McBroom, 59, of Jersey City, N.J., was freed after the acquittal and went to the U.S. Embassy, where officials refused reporters access to her. The prosecution had charged that McBroom’s firm, Palm International, never registered with the state petroleum corporation as a company dealing in oil and that it engaged in a series of deals to export petroleum products.
