Prep Baseball : Sharpnack Shuts Out Anaheim as Fountain Valley Opens With 4-0 Win

Fountain Valley pitcher Bob Sharpnack had seven strikeouts in five innings as the Barons defeated Anaheim, 4-0, in the opening round of the 32-team Loara Baseball Tournament Wednesday.

The Barons (1-0) scored the game’s first run in the fourth inning when Tim Reach led off with a single, stole second, and was driven in by Sharpnack. After Terry Reichert walked, Sam August hit a two-run homer. Pitcher Dan Barber took the season-opening loss for Anaheim (0-1), which managed just two hits to the Barons’ seven.

In other Loara tournament games:

La Quinta 5, Sunny Hills 1--Solid defense, good pitching, and four first-inning runs helped the Aztecs (1-0) advance to a second-round game against El Dorado in the winners’ bracket. Aztec pitcher Steve Hunt (1-0) went the distance to earn the victory, and Paul Abbott was the loser for Sunny Hills. The Lancers got their only hit and run on Tim Byrnes’ homer.

Troy 4, Cypress 1--Warrior pitcher Tony Panetti (1-0) struck out seven batters and allowed the Centurions just one hit in four innings Wednesday. Troy’s Jeff DeJesse, John Mash, and Mark Crissinger each hit solo homers. Cypress pitcher Al Aguirre (0-1) took the loss. Troy will face John W. North High of Riverside in the second-round of the winners’ bracket Friday.

Laguna Hills 4, St. Paul 3--The Hawks’ Jay Christensen not only singled to drive in the two winning runs in the fourth inning, but also pitched a complete game. St. Paul’s Art Salas was the losing pitcher.

Los Alamitos 4, Downey 3--Griffin Randy Hacker (1-0) pitched five innings for the victory, and the Griffins’ Travis Tarchione hit a two-run homer.

Newport Harbor 8, Dana Hills 5--The Sailors’ Chris Hirahara was 3 for 3 including a double and three RBIs. Newport Harbor scored five runs in the sixth inning. Barry Tovey pitched five innings for Dana Hills and gave up seven hits, taking the loss. Ed Wagner was the winning pitcher. Scott Hefner went 2-for-4 with two doubles to lead the Dolphins.

El Dorado 22, San Clemente 7--Golden Hawk Jeff Petredes provided the offense, going 3-for-5 with a grand slam. El Dorado scored 10 runs in the fifth inning, and the win went to reliever Frank Ricco.

Western 4, Pacifica 3--Mike Frabotta drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for the Pioneers in opening-round action. Western trailed, 3-0, but scored two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to win. David Tellers was the winning pitcher.

Esperanza 9, Santa Ana Valley 3--Eric Cox hit a three-run homer in the sixth to lead the Aztecs, and Mike Simms added a two-run double. Winning pitcher Steve Halweg went 4 innings, giving up three runs on four hits and struck out four.

El Toro 5, Ocean View 2--The Chargers scored four runs in the top of the third as Frank Appice walked with the bases loaded to force in a run, and Scott Shockey singled to score two more. Appice scored on an error to complete the Charger scoring. Phil Chess hit a solo home run for the Seahawks. Richard Faulks gave up five hits in earning the win for El Toro.

In nonleague action:

Canyon 8, Brea 3--The Comanches’ Steve Milledge set a school record for hits, going 5-for-5 including a solo home run, and Leonard Damian pitched his first victory of the season. Brea was led by Fred Camarena with three hits.

Mission Viejo 5, Corona del Mar 3--The Diablos were powered by Brendan Murphy’s three hits and Don Roberson’s two. Corona del Mar’s Steve Satchel hit a three-run homer to account for all the Sea King runs.
