May 8 was chosen by San Diego Superior Court Judge James Malkus as the date for Mayor Roger Hedgecock’s retrial on felony conspiracy and perjury charges, but attorneys on both sides said they doubt that the case will begin until the fall. Hedgecock’s attorney, Michael Pancer, said that it would be “physically impossible” for him to handle the trial in May because of his work load and that any new lawyer would need months to prepare. “I really have no idea what we’re doing now,” Assistant Dist. Atty. Richard D. Huffman said. Hedgecock’s case conceivably might not be completed until the end of this year, he added. Hedgecock’s first trial on the charges, which stem from allegedly illegal contributions to his 1983 mayoral campaign, ended in a mistrial on Feb. 13, with the jury deadlocked 11 to 1 in favor of conviction.
