Weekend to Be Cool, With a 30% Chance of Showers

A storm system that was developing Friday over northern Nevada is expected to move into southern Nevada and southwestern Utah by this afternoon. The cold, unstable air mass associated with it will produce cloudy skies over much of Southern California and bring a 30% chance of showers today and tonight, the National Weather Service said.

The snow level in the mountains will start near 4,500 feet today, then lower to 3,500 feet tonight as the colder air moves into the Southland.

The storm will start to move eastward Sunday, leaving partly cloudy skies and chilly temperatures in most areas, forecasters said.

In coastal areas, rainfall amounts will range from .10 of an inch to .30, and mountain areas may get half an inch to an inch of precipitation, the weather service said.

In the deserts, winds of 25 m.p.h. to 35 m.p.h. with gusts to 50 m.p.h. were expected today, especially in the northern deserts, including the Antelope Valley and the Mojave Desert, where snow also could fall.

Blowing dust and sand can be expected in all desert areas, forecasters said.

Along with the chance of showers, cooler temperatures are expected in the region, with highs in the low 60s today and in the mid-50s on Sunday.

Friday’s Civic Center high was 67.
