Chucks Edwards, a Buena Park bricklayer who saved a 69-year-old woman from an attacker, will receive the Andrew Carnegie Medal for heroism at 7 p.m. Monday in the City Council chambers.

Edwards, 34, was one of 20 people nationwide chosen by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission to receive the honor, which includes a cash award of $2,500. Although the commission announced the commendation last December, the City of Buena Park will make the actual presentation.

On Nov. 18, 1983, Edwards was in a Gemco parking lot in Anaheim when he saw Gertrude Christensen being attacked at knifepoint. Edwards fought with the assailant for several minutes, sustaining stab wounds to his chest and abdomen. Both Edwards and Christensen recovered from their wounds. Police eventually captured the attacker, who is now serving three years in state prison.
