A visitor and cultural events center to plan activities for the downtown area and promote the city has been approved by the City Council.

The center, to be located in the McCulloch Building at 116 West 4th St., will plan festivals, lecture series, parades and other events intended to “market the city and establish it as a fun and exciting place to live, work and play,” said Laurie Cottrell, executive director of communications and marketing for the city.

The council allocated $233,000 for the center’s eventual four-person staff, rent and office equipment.

In the next few months, the center’s staff will work on a multi-cultural artist exhibit titled “Women in Art,” a Cinco de Mayo celebration and several noontime concerts, probably to be held in the downtown area. City officials hope eventually to move the center to a location that is more accessible to visitors, Cottrell said.
