An ‘Evening With Marilyn Horne’ Set

A blue-ribbon crowd will be on hand for the “Evening With Marilyn Horne” concert Saturday evening in Bovard Auditorium celebrating the centennial of the USC School of Music.

Pre-concert, the school’s dean, Dr. William Thomson, and his wife Betty, host an on-campus dinner in Hancock Memorial Museum for honorary board members and benefactors. Philanthropist Mrs. G. Allan Hancock and her guest, George C. Page, honorary board member and USC trustee, will attend. So will opera devotee Flora Laney Thornton, Virginia and Simon Ramo, Margaret Nee, the Roger Stewarts of Tucson, Ariz. (she was Marilyn Horne’s roommate when both were USC music students), and Miss Horne’s former manager, Dorothy Huttenback.

The Thomas Tiltons will come from San Francisco, and Gordon Getty’s attendance awaits the production schedule of his opera in the new Bay City music center complex. Benefactor Kathryn Partridge of Santa Barbara and Professor Michael Fells, USC chairman for the vocal arts department, and Mrs. Fells also will attend.

The occasion, Katherine Bentley tells us, supports scholarships.

On another musical front, the Los Angeles Master Chorale is hosting luncheon today at La Couronne in Pasadena to launch “Casino Chorale,” its 1985 benefit.

Girl Scouts found a good reason to visit Cheryl Miller, Olympic gold medalist: they surprised her with Girl Scout cookies, and she agreed to be honorary chairman of the Cookie Sale.

It all becomes official Thursday at a kickoff during the USC-UCLA women’s basketball game at the Sports Arena. Several hundred Girl Scouts and friends will cheer.

Those yum-yums, $2 a box, will be sold at booths throughout the Southland from Friday to March 25, and specifically at Thrifty Drug Stores on Saturday and March 16 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

You may recall, two years ago Luminaires Juniors solved their first case: “Murder on the Orient Express.” Now it’s “kismet, karma or a killer in khaki” for their “Intrigue in India” Saturday evening at the top ballroom of the Sheraton-Universal.

Co-chairmen Mmes. Steven F. Kanaly and Thomas Foster hope to net $50,000 to benefit the Estelle Doheny Eye Foundation and its 35-bed hospital scheduled for completion this month.

Stone temples, towering ferns and lifelike wild animals will provide the setting for the mystery game and black-tie dinner dance. Guests will be asked to join the New Delhi superintendent of police in determining which member of Lord Cecil Proudbottom’s expedition has committed the dreadful deed, natch, on a safari in the remote jungles.

Interest is high: the grand prize is a trip for two to Tahiti.

Deliberately complicating the plot are Mrs. James M. Julian, president, and a committee including Miss Pamela Simpson, Mmes. William Doheny Jr., Wendy Doheny Stollenwerck, Philip F. Fowler Jr., Donald Hromadka, Brian C. Leck, John Montanaro, Thomas Clark, Jeffrey N. Gardner, John Campbell, James H. Dahl, Diane Moller, Kenneth Young, Charles G. Cale, Jon S. Wellinger and Edward D. MacFarlane.

As a little token of gratitude, Dunn School (Los Olivos) parent Carol Sobieski, who happens to be screenwriter of “Sylvester,” suggested a preview screening as a benefit for the school’s Learning Resources Center.

With the blessing of executive producer (and Santa Ynez Valley rancher) Ray Stark and the people at Columbia Pictures, the occasion becomes fact next Wednesday at the Directors’ Guild Theatre.

Dunn parent George Peppard and grandparent Robert Mitchum will be honorary co-chairmen, in keeping with the family feeling.

Dunn parents Jack and Pat Peutet (Arriba Restaurants) will host hors d’oeuvres for the reception. Wines will be courtesy of Dunn trustees Kate Firestone (Firestone Vineyard, Los Olivos), Louis Lucas (Tepusquet Vineyards, Santa Maria) and Louis M. Ream (Zaca Mesa Winery, Los Olivos). Pretty fancy potluck.

It’s in memory of Mrs. Clifford (Evie) Cherry, their former president, and that’s why the St. Vincent Medical Center Auxiliary is especially dedicated to a memorial concert and dinner featuring the Los Angeles Pops Orchestra Friday evening at the Sheraton Premiere..

Involved are Mmes. Lester Susser, chairman; Taro Yokoyama, auxiliary president, and Robert Waymost. They’re working closely with L.A. Pops Director Victor Wong.

Proceeds will go to community outreach and St. Vincent’s cancer program.

Mrs. Cherry, wife of St. Vincent staff member Dr. Clifford B. Cherry, was dedicated to dozens of charitable groups.

All day Sunday, Las Madrecitas hosts its fourth annual Travel/Silent Auction and Luncheon at the Los Angeles Marriott to benefit Orthopaedic Hospital.

Chairman Bettie Hedlund informs that proceeds will go the group’s pledge of $113,000 for renovation of third-floor pediatrics.
