Santa Monica
Assembly Speaker Willie Brown (D-San Francisco)has appointed Assemblyman Tom Hayden (D-Santa Monica) to head a task force that will investigate toxic dumping in Santa Monica Bay and recommend legislation dealing with toxic contamination.
Toxic dumping started in the 1940s and continued into the early 1970s, according to Hayden.
“I cannot understand the mentality that routinely allowed the dumping of massive quantities of DDT in the bay,” Hayden said. “We will conduct a complete investigation of the regulatory bodies which appeared derelict in their duty to protect the public health and the marine resources of the bay.”
Hayden’s task force is expected to report back to the Legislature within 90 days.
