Alice Shapiro; Concert Pianist, Music Professor

Share

Alice Shapiro, a concert pianist and professor of music at Scripps College in Claremont, has died of cancer at her Clarement home, school officials said. She was 61.

Miss Shapiro, who died Feb. 28, joined the college in 1966 as its first artist-in-residence, teaching master courses in chamber music and advanced piano.

A New Jersey native and graduate of Columbia University and the Julliard School of Music, Miss Shapiro made her professional debut in 1955. She was a specialist in Beethoven’s piano music and was, according to a college spokesman, one of only a few women pianists to have performed all 32 of Beethoven’s sonatas in a cycle of concerts.
