A two-out eighth-inning double by Kevin Romine drove in Glenn Hoffman to give the Boston Red Sox a 3-2 exhibition victory over the world champion Detroit Tigers Friday at Lakeland, Fla.
Boston, which scored two unearned runs off Jack Morris in the first inning, got the winning run after Hoffman went to second when Bill Scherrer, the third of four Tiger pitchers, committed his second balk. Ed Glynn, the fourth of five Boston pitchers, got the win and Mark Clear the save.
Notes In other exhibition openers, the Houston Astros defeated the New York Yankees, 9-6, at Kissimmee, Fla., and the Chicago White Sox beat Kansas City, 4-2, at Sarasota, Fla. . . . Houston shortstop Dickie Thon, who missed the 1984 season after being struck in the face with a pitch, doubled in his first plate appearance and added a single in the fifth inning. A crowd of 6,742 saw the first game played at Osceola County Stadium, the Astros’ new training facility. . . . White Sox pitcher Al Jones had two scoreless innings against the Royals to get the win. Mike LaCoss took the loss. White Sox shortstop Ozzie Guillen, expected to become a regular this season, committed two errors.
