Orange : Police Chief Resigns, Is Replaced by Deputy Chief

Chief of Police Norman A. Traub resigned Monday and was replaced by Deputy Chief Wayne Street, City Manager J. William Little said.

Traub’s resignation came as no surprise, since he had announced his intent to do so last summer. Until his official retirement in June, Traub will serve in a semi-retired capacity as special assistant to the city manager, performing “special projects and studies (including) in-service training classes for all city personnel,” Little said.

“I wish to express my appreciation for Norm’s support during my first year as city manager of Orange and look forward to continuing our working relationship,” Little said.

Traub, who had been chief for four years, said his resignation was “predicated on my confidence in Wayne’s ability to serve the city well.”

Street, 51, joined the city’s Police Department in 1962. He had previously served with the Omaha, Neb., police force. The new chief was promoted to sergeant in 1967, lieutenant in 1975 and captain in 1980. As captain, he has been involved in all three major work areas of the department-- management services, investigations and field services, Little said.

He has also served as acting chief from time to time, and deputy chief since early last month. The new chief will be paid about $57,600 annually.
