College Enrollment Drops 4.3%

Share

Enrollment at Glendale Community College has dipped 4.3% this semester compared to the same time last year, statistics presented to the school’s board of trustees showed this week.

The report was broken down to show attendance figures for day students and night students. Although the number of students taking classes at night rose 1.8% from last year, day student enrollment dropped 8.8%.

College officials could not explain the overall drop in attendance, which lowers enrollment at the school to 10,452. However, John Davitt, vice president of instructional services, attributed the decrease in the college’s day student enrollment to the economy.

“It has always been the case that when the economy is robust, we see a drop in day enrollment,” Davitt said, explaining that students often leave day classes to take a job and then re-enroll for courses at night.
