Nebraska a 79-66 Winner Over Canisius in NIT

Center Dave Hoppen made 13 of 16 free throws and scored 21 points Wednesday to lead Nebraska to a 79-66 victory over Canisius in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament.

Nebraska forward Bill Jackman added 15 points, including seven in the final six minutes as the Cornhuskers outscored Canisius, 18-8.

Harvey Marshall scored 14 points, Curtis Moore 11 and Brian Carr 10 for the Cornhuskers, who had lost nine of their last 11 games.

Guard Ray Hall scored 16 points, center Mike Smrek 14 and Michael Ray Jackson 10 for Canisius, 20-10.

Nebraska built 11-point leads early in each half. The Golden Griffins closed to within 61-58 before the Huskers used accurate free-throw shooting to pull away.

Nebraska (16-13) made 33 of 41 from the free-throw line.
