A youth who died in a small shed fire in Capistrano Beach was identified Friday as Brendan Bernard Carey, 17, a senior at San Clemente High School.

The body was burned beyond recognition, and identification was made through dental charts.

Carey was found at 2 a.m. Thursday inside a plywood building, 4 feet by 5 feet wide and 4 feet high, in the backyard of some acquaintances, fire and sheriff’s officials said.

Officials are still investigating how the fire started and what the youth was been doing in the small shed.

Officials say they believe the fire was accidental. Carey died of smoke inhalation and third- and fourth-degree burns, a spokeswoman for the Orange County coroner’s office said.
