A bridge team led by Barry Crane of Studio City took second place Friday night in the annual open team contest at the North American Bridge championships in Montreal.

The winners, Eric Rodwell of West Lafayette, Ind., Jeff Meckstroth of Pickerington, Ohio, Ron Rubin of Livingston, N.J., Michael Becker of New York City, Mike Lawrence of Kenzington, Calif., and Peter Weichsel of North Miami Beach, Fla., scored 198 international match points to 88 for Crane, Tom Sanders of Nashville, Tenn., Don Sutherlin of San Francisco and Bobby Nail, Dan Morse and Ira Chorush, all of Houston.

Crane, for many years the leading master point winner in North American bridge tournaments, has won more pair championships than any other expert, but his schedule as a TV producer seldom permits him to spend weekdays at national tournaments. Only once before, in 1951, has he reached the finals of a national knockout team championship.

The tournament continues with a four-session open pair championship, ending today, with the women’s team championship scheduled to end Monday.
