NCAA Women’s Roundup : Georgia Wins, Will Face UCLA Thursday at Pauley

Katrina McClain and Janet Harris each scored 24 points as Georgia’s women’s team defeated Tennessee Tech, 91-74, Saturday at Athens, Ga., in the first round of the NCAA West Regional basketball tournament.

Georgia will face UCLA Thursday at Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins beat Washington, 78-62, Friday.

McClain scored 20 of her points before intermission as the Lady Bulldogs rolled to a 50-33 halftime lead.

The closest Tennessee Tech got in the second half was 81-72, when Cheryl Taylor converted a three-point play with 2:16 left.

Taylor led Tech (20-9) with 21 points and 23 rebounds.

Old Dominion 88, Syracuse 63--Tracy Claxton had 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead the fifth-ranked Lady Monarchs in the first round of the East Regional at Norfolk, Va.

The Lady Monarchs will play North Carolina State in the the East Regional semifinals Thursday at Old Dominion.

Old Dominion (27-3) also got 14 points from Dawn Cullen and 12 each from Medina Dixon, Adrienne Goodson and Donna Harrington.

Felisha Legett scored 14 points for Syracuse (18-13).

Tennessee 65, Virginia 55--Shelley Sexton scored 15 points and sparked a 23-5 Tennessee run in the second half of the Mideast Regional first-round game at Knoxville, Tenn.

Freshman reserve Jennifer Tuggle and point guard Dawn Marsh each added 12 points as Tennessee (22-9) advanced to a second-round game with Mississippi.

Nancy Mayer scored 14 points for Virginia (21-8).

Auburn 82, Memphis State 64--Helene Baroody scored 20 points for Auburn in the opening round of the Midwest Regional tournament at Auburn, Ala.

Memphis State took a nine-point lead in the first five minutes, but Auburn battled back to claim a 37-34 halftime advantage.

In the second half, Memphis State took a one-point lead with 15:32 remaining, but Mae Ola Bolton hit a shot from the right side to put Auburn back on top to stay.

Joining Baroody in double figures for Auburn were Debra Larkin with 16, Brenda Hill with 15 and Bolton with 12.

Memphis State (23-7) was led by Regina Street with 19 points, followed by Vera Webb with 17.

The victory advanced Auburn (25-5) to the Midwest Regional semifinals at Monroe, La., next Saturday against Northeast Louisiana.
