BRUSSELS — Belgium’s Agriculture Ministry said Tuesday it has ordered at least 10,000 pigs to be destroyed because of an outbreak of African swine pest.
Ministry spokesman Jef Verhaeren said the highly contagious disease has been confirmed in at least nine centers in western Belgium.
Two weeks ago, the European Economic Community banned all exports of pork from Belgium. The ban is in effect until at least the end of this week, after which it may be lifted for those areas not affected by the disease.
