A judge has given one-year prison terms to each of three poachers who pleaded guilty to poisoning a famous salmon river with sodium cyanide, killing hundreds of fish.

A pound of the deadly chemical was dumped last August in the River Dovey near Dolgellau, Wales--regarded as one of Britain’s most valuable stretches of salmon fishing.

The fish were suffocated by the poison but remained edible, Bolton Crown Court was told. The men were arrested while carrying sacks of fish away from the river.

A mile-long stretch of the river was destroyed and will cost thousands of dollars to re-stock, the court was told.
