Spring Training Roundup : Brunansky Is Swinging a Hot Bat

Tom Brunansky, whm hit 32 homers and drove in 85 runs last season, is off to a fast start this spring.

He hit a two-pun homer off Jim Dorqey in the sixth inning Tuesday to give the Minnesota Twins a 5-3 exhibition victory over the Boston Red Sox at Orlando, Fla. It waq Brunansky’s third homer of the spring, and he has a team-leading 13 RBIs in nine games this spring.

Ken Schrom and Rich Yett pitched for the Twins. Schrom, who is scheduled to be the No. 4 starter, allowed three runs and six hits in five innings. Yett, a rookie vying for the No. 5 spot, allowed only two hits over the final four innings.

At Phoenix, Oakland pitcher Mike Norris, who underwent drug rehabilitation before reporting to camp, made his first appearance of spring training as the A’s beat San Diego, 6-5. It was the first time he had faced major leaguers in more than a year.

Throwing strictly fastballs, Norris pitched an inning and allowed the Padres’ final run in the ninth on Al Bumbry’s RBI single. He said he was “ecstatic” about returning to the A’s and said he felt he had a “good chance” to make the team.

At Fort Myers, Fla., Lynn Jones hit a solo homer in the eighth inning off Jack O’Connor to give Kansas City a 3-2 win over Montreal. George Brett singled with bases loaded in the third inning for Kansas City’s first two runs.

At Clearwater, Fla., Steve Jeltz, battling Ivan DeJesus for Philadelphia’s starting shortstop job, broke a 1-1 tie with a fifth-inning triple and later scored a run to help the Phillies beat the Chicago White Sox, 3-2.

At Kissimmee, Fla., Phil Garner knocked in four runs to lead a 21-hit attack as Houston routed the Detroit Tigers, 14-3. The Astros had lost four straight going into the game.

At Bradenton, Fla., Toronto won their 10th of 11 spring games as Mitch Webster hit a two-run triple and scored on a single by Fred McGriff in the eighth to help the Blue Jays beat Pittsburgh, 4-1.

At Tampa, Fla., Dave Parker’s three-run homer keyed a four-run first as Cincinnati beat St. Louis, 5-3. The Reds have won seven of nine games.

At Tucson, Cleveland’s Bert Blyleven gave up six runs on eight hits as the Indians lost to Milwaukee, 7-5.

At Scottdale, Ariz., rookie Rob Deer’s three-run homer in the seventh inning helped San Francisco defeat Seattle, 8-3.

Dusty Baker drove in two runs for the Giants with a third-inning double and a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
