Claremont : $1.3-Million Grant Helps Start Latino Study Center
A new institute for Latino studies has been established in Claremont with a $1.3-million grant. Administrators say they will focus on the educational problems of Latinos in American society, including discrimination, student attrition and illiteracy.
The grant, from the Carnegie Corp. of New York and the Times Mirror Foundation, will permit the Tomas Rivera Center to operate for three years, President Arturo Madrid said. Although it is affiliated with the Claremont Graduate School, he said the center will not receive university funding.
The center’s staff also will study employment, immigration, health and housing of Latinos, present public forums and publish booklets to “educate policy makers and opinion makers about the Hispanic population and its circumstances,” Madrid said.
