Construction of a $50-million refuse-to-energy plant has begun, with operation expected to begin in June, 1987.
The plant at 5900 Sheila St. is expected to burn an average of 255 tons of solid waste a day, generating the equivalent of electrical energy consumed by 20,000 homes. The electricity produced will be sold to the Southern California Edison Co.
Financed by revenue bonds, the plant will be operated jointly by the City of Commerce and the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts.
The plant will be equipped to filter particles and remove acid gases and noxious fumes, said Michael W. Selna, project manager.
