Share

Two of four employee unions in the Garden Grove Unified School District have presented the Board of Education with proposals for salary increases.

The Garden Grove Education Assn., representing teachers, librarians and nurses, requested an 18% pay increase and incentives to retirement before the age of 60 at this week’s board meeting.

The group also wants salary bonuses based on experience to begin earlier than the current anniversary years of 16, 20 and 27. Instead, the association asked that bonuses be awarded on an employee’s 15th, 17th and 19th anniversary with the district.

Association president Winnie Leeb also asked that teachers’ salaries bed made the board’s No. 1 budget priority.

The association is in the second of a three-year contract with provisions for annual salary negotiations. Last year, district teachers received a 9% pay increase, while all other employees received 6%.

The second union, the Garden Grove Pupil Personnel Services Assn., representing counselors, psychologists and speech pathologists, asked for a 15% pay hike.

That union also requested monetary compensation for advanced degrees and retirement incentives before the age of 50.
