Filing of Tax Returns Lags

One month before the filing deadline, fewer than half of the nation’s taxpayers had mailed their 1984 tax returns, the Internal Revenue Service said today.

Through March 15, the latest figures available, the IRS had received 45.6 million returns, down 1.8% from the same period a year ago. The number of returns processed was down almost one-third from the first 11 weeks of 1983--19.6 million had made their way through the system, compared with 29 million at this point last year. The slow processing is blamed on the switch to new computers at the 10 IRS regional service centers.
