The Nation : No ‘Hate Crimes’ Listing
Reagan Administration officials said that it would be too difficult to include “hate crime” categories--offenses involving the expression of racial, ethnic or religious prejudice--in the FBI’s national crime statistics and suggested that Congress collect newspaper clippings to obtain such information. The testimony by Justice Department officials at a House Judiciary subcommittee hearing angered Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.), who responded: “These problems are bigger than going to a clipping service. That’s a simplistic solution.”
