Pakistani leader Gen. Zia ul-Haq appointed Mohammed Khan Junejo as the nation’s first prime minister in eight years. Junejo, 52, said he would seek an immediate vote of confidence from the new 237-member National Assembly. Zia, in a speech to the first meeting of Parliament since he overthrew Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1977, said Pakistan would not withdraw support for the Afghan resistance despite stern warnings from the Soviet Union.
