The Region : Ex-Ojai Mayor Accused of Embezzlement

A former Ojai mayor and City Council member, Clifford Hey, was arrested for allegedly embezzling more than $200,000 from the estate of a woman who died three years ago, officials said. The Ventura County district attorney charged that Hey, 56, who, as co-executor of the estate of Eleanor Veevers, took funds from her bank account and from her investment company. Hey, who is charged with 32 felony counts of embezzlement and two counts of perjury in connection with the filing of two probate documents, was released after being booked at county jail in Ventura. Hey’s attorney said that all the money Hey borrowed from the estate had been repaid, except for $50,000 in loans. Veevers told Hey on the day before she died in 1982 that the loans did not have to be repaid, the attorney said. Court documents indicate that Hey in 1984 paid $110,000 back to the estate.
