Bullard Gets First Track Wins at USC as Cook Sweeps Sprints in Double Dual Meet

Ernie Bullard got his first victories as the USC track coach Saturday when the Trojans beat San Diego State, 90-73, and Iowa, 90-71, in a double dual meet at Cromwell Field.
San Diego State topped Iowa, 91-71, in their dual competition.
Darwin Cook led USC in the first scoring meets of the season by winning both the 100 meters (10.43) and 200 meters (21.02). Cook also ran a leg on the Trojans’ victorious sprint relay team, which posted an NCAA qualifying time of 39.65 seconds.
Among other winners for USC were Michael Pullins in the triple jump (52-10); Doug Wicks in the pole vault (17-6); Eric Schermerhorn in the 800 meters (1:51.9); Ed Tave in the long jump (25-5 3/4); Chris Crisman in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (52.04), and John Wolltarsky in the hammer throw (216-9).
Iowa’s Gary Kostrubala won both the shot put (53-0 1/2) and the discus throw (169-1). Among other winners for Iowa were John Dobbs in the 5,000 meters (14:55.12); Al Greene in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:06.2); Ronnie McCoy in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.10 seconds), and Kenny Williams in the 400 meters (47.63 seconds).
San Diego State winners were Drew Pierson in the high jump (7-0); Paul Greer in the 1,500 meters (3:51.04), and Jason Twedt in the javelin (212-11).
The USC women were also victorious, defeating Washington State, 90-75, San Diego State, 97-66, and Hawaii, 115-45. Washington State defeated San Diego State, 86-70, and Hawaii, 100-57, and San Diego State beat Hawaii, 97-58.
Among the USC winners were Yvette Bates in the triple jump (41-0 1/2) and long jump (20-7); LaWanda Cabell in the 400 meters (54.74 seconds), and Gervaise McCraw in the 100 meters (11.90 seconds) and the 200 meters (23.70 seconds)
