Local News in Brief : Driver Hits Hydrant, Creates 50-Foot Geyser

A towering white column of water was unleashed about 10:15 a.m. Sunday when a motorist knocked over a fire hydrant at the southeastern corner of Nordhoff Street and Corbin Avenue in Chatsworth.

The motorist drove away immediately after the accident, a witness said, leaving police with a license plate number jotted down by a bystander. “It was a hit-and-run,” one officer said.

Two workers with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power stopped the 50-foot geyser after about 30 minutes, but not before a crowd of spectators had gathered.

“It was great,” said Glenda Ward of Simi Valley, who was among the spectators. “It looked like Old Faithful,” said her husband, Max.
