A French official said Sunday that he plans to pay an official visit to Albania in May, the first such trip from France to the Communist Balkan state in more than 40 years.

Jean-Michel Baylet, secretary of state in the French External Relations Ministry, told Radio Monte Carlo that his request to visit Albania has been granted and he expects to go there at the end of May.

France is one of the few West European countries that maintains diplomatic ties with Albania’s Stalinist leadership. Baylet said he does not know whether his visit signals a willingness by Albania to improve links with the West.
