Stevie Wonder’s Music Barred on South Africa Radio

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa —  The government-run South African Broadcasting Corp. said today that it will no longer play Stevie Wonder’s music because of a remark the singer-songwriter made after winning an Oscar on Monday night.

As he received the award for best original song, Wonder said he was accepting “in the name of Nelson Mandela,” the best-known black prisoner of South Africa’s apartheid system of white minority rule.

Mandela, 66, is a one-time Johannesburg lawyer who became a civil rights leader and was sentenced to life in prison in 1964 for “planning sabotage to overthrow” white domination.

Wonder won his Oscar for “I Just Called to Say I Love You.”
