Police today arrested the teen-age uncle of a 4-year-old girl who stunned preschool officials and her parents when 13 glassine bags containing $650 worth of heroin spilled from her book bag.

The girl and her parents did not know how the heroin got into her blue satchel Tuesday morning, said police Sgt. Michael Bass.

But Bass said police learned that the mother’s brother, William Butler, 18--released from prison 11 days ago after serving time on drug charges--was an overnight guest of the family Monday night.

The girl’s parents said that when Butler awoke Tuesday, he asked about the blue satchel that had been in the living room. Told that the girl had taken it to her preschool, Butler “became extremely distraught and upset and left the home,” Bass said.

Butler was picked up on a city street and charged with possession of heroin with intent to distribute.
