Pennsylvania Avenue May Be Closed Off to Protect White House
Secretary of the Treasury James A. Baker III told Congress on Tuesday that White House officials are considering a plan to close Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the executive mansion as a security measure.
However, Baker told a House Appropriations subcommittee that the concept is “still very much in the planning stage.”
Baker made his comments as he presented the Treasury Department’s budget for the fiscal year that begins on Oct. 1 and was asked by subcommittee Chairman Edward R. Roybal (D-Los Angeles) about a proposal to create “a campus effect around the White House.”
The Reagan Administration has requested an additional $4.1 million for the current fiscal year for security around the White House and Treasury Department buildings, and at the Naval Observatory grounds, site of the vice president’s residence.
