An 18-year-old male, in custody of the California Youth Authority for robbery, escaped Thursday afternoon from a work crew training in the Santa Ana River Regional Park in unincorporated Riverside County just northeast of Norco, authorities said.

Jerry Adams, CYA chief of security, said the Latino male, described as 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighing 160 pounds, escaped from Hidden Valley along the Santa Ana River off Etiwanda Avenue. He was wearing a fire-crew orange jump suit over a T-shirt and shorts. The group was on a forest fire training mission in thick, brushy terrain, the official said.

Helicopters from several law enforcement agencies were used in an attempt to find the youth. The search was canceled because of darkness and will resume today.
