All-American cross-country runner Mara E. Lazdans, 20, was killed when her automobile collided head-on with one driven by a suspected drunk driver near Ontario. The California Highway Patrol said Lazdans, a student at California State University, Northridge, was pronounced dead at the scene when her car was knocked over a 100-foot embankment by the force of the impact on California 71, about 10 miles south of Ontario. The driver of the other car, Blaine A. Hammond, 26, of Chino sustained minor injuries, and was booked on suspicion of manslaughter. Lazdans was named an All-American when she placed in the top 25 runners at the NCAA Division I Cross Country track meet this year.
