A 52-year-old Fullerton motorist died after apparently suffering a heart attack on the Costa Mesa Freeway in Orange, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said Monday.

The CHP said Donald D. Adams was traveling southbound about 12:30 p.m. on the freeway near Collins Avenue when he told his wife, Nancy, he was having severe back pains.

Adams veered the car to the right shoulder but lost control, left the freeway and struck a tree, injuring both occupants, the spokeswoman said.

Adams suffered a deep neck laceration and was taken to Western Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The CHP spokeswoman said it was not known whether Adams died as a result of the neck injury or the attack.

His wife, who suffered severe injuries including a fractured right leg, was listed in critical condition at the medical center.
