Pickering, Envoy to El Salvador, Named Israel Ambassador
Thomas R. Pickering, the U.S. ambassador to El Salvador, has been nominated as the next American envoy to Israel, the White House announced here Friday.
There was no indication of his successor in San Salvador, where Pickering, 53, has served since August, 1983.
In Israel, Pickering is to succeed Samuel W. Lewis, who has served under both the Carter and Reagan administrations. His nomination is subject to Senate confirmation. A career Foreign Service officer, Pickering has been ambassador to Nigeria and from 1974 to 1978 was U.S. envoy to Jordan.
