why apologize?

Thank you so very much for presenting the Marianna and David Fisher house (Remodeling Makes a Dream Come True, Feb. 24). It was sheer joy to see the lovely contemporary dream brought to fruition by the Fishers. My only quibble was that Virginia Gray seemed to apologize for and denigrate the house for being contemporary. Her article opened and closed with “Not everyone would be happy to live in this sophisticated, starkly contemporary environment.” Many of us do cherish and love contemporary houses and wish to see more of them; but we are constantly barraged with the cutesy, quaint varieties or the overbearing, gilt-laden, pseudo-European styles.
