BERLIN —
Construction workers digging a foundation for a new apartment building uncovered petrified tree trunks estimated to be 250 million years old, the state-run East German news agency ADN said Friday.
It said the discovery was made in Karl-Marx-Stadt, a city in the southeastern part of East Germany near the Czech border.
Many examples of such trees are in the Stone Forest in the center of the city.
