The state Department of Corrections has agreed to consider Wiley’s Well, a state highway rest area 17 miles west of Blythe on Interstate 10, as a compromise site for a prison in Riverside County. Sen. Robert Presley (D-Riverside) proposed Wiley’s Well as an alternative to six other Riverside County locations, including two hotly disputed sites near Blythe. Opponents, particularly large farmers, have threatened legal action to delay construction and economic reprisals against local merchants if either of the Blythe sites is approved. The department will continue evaluating the other six sites.
