Back to College for Fun

Northern California’s famed Feather River country embraces more than 2,500 square miles of rambling streams, blue lakes, rolling mountains, peaceful green valleys and miles of unspoiled forested land. And here in the delightful town of Quincy (population 6,000), Feather River College has prepared the 1985 agenda for its successful series of one-week senior citizen educational workshops, now in their 10th year.

For a maximum tuition of $185, enrollees are provided furnished one-bedroom apartments that include linens, maid service and three meals daily in the student cafeteria.

Courses will be determined by the students’ choice of subject and the week selected for attendance. Topics will include the Gold Rush history of historic Plumas County, the area’s lumber industry, historic railroads, hydroelectric water power sources at Lake Almanor, plus orientation in bird watching and the study of local flora and fauna.

Outdoor Activities

Great emphasis is placed on outdoor activity with visits to lakes and valleys, including Mt. Lassen National Park and Lake Almanor. Bus transportation is included, and picnic lunches are part of the deal.

Ample free time permits participation in golfing, fishing, hiking, swimming, camping, horseback riding and picnicking. Reno and Lake Tahoe are easy one-day round trips. Social events among students include a get-acquainted party, cheese and wine tasting at a museum, as well as impromptu card and game sessions in the evenings.

For seniors with RVs, the Feather River College program offers the meals, instruction, the side trips and RV parking spaces with power and water hookups for $100 a week per person.

Class Limits

Classes, held during nine weeks in summer, with two classes running concurrently each week, are limited to 40 students. Minimum age limit is 50.

A limited number of one-bedroom apartments are available at an additional charge, and requests for single accommodations may necessarily be declined. Several two-bedroom apartments are available at extra charge. Facts for persons with physical limitations are covered in the workshop literature.

Speaking of RVs, motor homes and the like, here’s something special: the first cruise ship to carry recreational vehicles.
